WVNano/LSAMP

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) at WVU has been awarded a joint National Science Foundation grant with the 10 higher education institutions in Kentucky and West Virginia.  The WVU LSAMP has partnered with WVNano.  The goal of the WVNano education component and the LSAMP program is to make a significant contribution to the attainment of a diverse, internationally competitive, and globally-engaged workforce of scientists, engineers, and well-prepared citizens. Partnerships and collaborations with colleges, universities, national research laboratories, the business and industry community, and other federal agencies help attain this goal.

Program Overview:

There are four components to the program.

  • First, there is a pre-Freshman summer bridge program (Summer Launch) for students who will matriculate at WVU in the fall semester of 2007.  This component will be a four week residential session in Morgantown, with coursework in precalculus mathematics and an academic orientation focusing on study skills, time management, STEM career preparation. Cost for tuition, room board, books and enhancement experiences are provided for WVNano/LSAMP Scholars.

  • Second, there are structured research experiences (WVNano SURE) for current WVU sophomores or juniors, to take place in the summer under the supervision/mentorship of current STEM faculty.

  • Third, there is a section of the academic year calculus sequence beginning in the fall semester 2007 with preferential enrollment for EHRDO/LSAMP students.

  • Fourth, there is a peer mentoring program to build a community of learners for navigation through your college years.
