Who should apply?

  • Students from Disadvantaged Regions (i.e. Appalachian Counties, Mississippi Delta)

Enrollment in LSAMP is open to a select highly committed group of African American, Hispanic, and Native American students who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (the STEM disciplines). WVNano targets these students and other historically underrepresented groups including women, persons with disabilites, first generation college students, and socio-economically disadvantaged (e.g., the Appalachian region). The program is designed to help each scholar reach his or her maximum potential; however, the program will only accomplish this goal if scholars are passionate and focused towards achieving at the highest level possible.  In particular, this program is of great potential benefit for those students who are interested in excelling from the very beginning of their academic careers and have aspirations of pursuing graduate school and careers in STEM related professions.

What to expect:

Students in the WVNano/LSAMP program meet other students with similar interests and motivation. They will explore a variety of avenues in science, mathematics, and engineering to improve their problem solving abilities and build experience for the future.

Each WVNano/LSAMP Scholar will work with faculty and peers to:

• Enhance achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses;
• Engage in mentoring relationships;
• Participate in a community of scholars with similar programs of study;
• Learn what it takes to be a successful scientist or mathemetician; and
• Prepare for leadership roles both during and after their time at WVU.

Each WVNano/LSAMP Scholar will learn to:

• Thrive and achieve at a high level in STEM areas;
• Effectively navigate their academic experience at WVU;
• Learn how to network and build relationships with peers, faculty and staff;
• Lead and follow in teams;
• Get the most out of every course that they take;
• Write high impact resumes and market their academic credentials, leadership abilities and work experiences and
• Conduct and execute a graduate school search.

Expectations of WVNano /LSAMP Scholars:

• Attend and participate actively in seminars, meetings, and events;
• Assist peers within the program with their academic and leadership development; and
• Remain in good academic standing within one of the STEM areas as a declared major.

Additional Benefits for WVNano/LSAMP Scholars who participate fully:

• Access to a mentoring family of peers, faculty and administrators who will help them to troubleshoot academic, cultural and social problems.

• Opportunities to engage in research internships after the first year of high achievement and full participation in the program.
